BRAZILIAN

JIU JITSU

AS A SPORT

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is based on the concept that a smaller, weaker defender can prevail against a bigger, stronger, heavier opponent by using leverage and weight distribution, taking the fight to the ground and using a number of holds and submissions to defeat them.

Originating from the Japanese martial arts Kodokan Judo and Jujutsu, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a combat sport that focuses on ground fighting.

During the early 1900s, the legendary Brazilian Gracie family transformed this martial art and it was transformed into what we know as BJJ today.  Over the last 30 years, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gained exposure and popularity with the rise of MMA..

It is often referred to as a “game of human chess” implementing hundreds of concepts and techniques that you learn through years of training.

MAKING BJJ YOUR SOLE FOCUS

If you would like to make Brazilian Jiu Jitsu your sole focus and your area of specialisation, we have you covered.

For our serious BJJ athletes, your training schedule includes 22 classes/programs per week tailored to support your BJJ performance.

Aside from the expected BJJ Technical Classes, Rolling, and Open Mat, your training schedule will also include Wrestling  Strength and Conditioning (Weights Training) and Flexibility programs as well as HIIT Bodyweight-based Fitness Classes.

Storm Combat is affiliated to Quan Wessels and implements Professor Richie Quan's methodology.  The affiliation affords our members a number of additional benefits including shared Open Mat, Affiliate Competitions, International and Local BJJ Seminars and more.

THE WRESTLING ADVANTAGE

Wrestling is one of, if not, the best grappling art that you can cross train with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for several reasons.  Wrestling develops your BJJ game and particularly your takedowns.  It promotes the development of your base and requires grit and tenacity.   Wrestlers are mainly known for amazing mental toughness and never give up mentality. The sport itself is so hard that the athletes must have a strong mindset to simply deal with it.

To score a takedown, wrestlers always need to adapt to various situations. Every position is different, and they need to think about three steps in advance. It’s almost like a human chess match. This way of putting various sequences together is also known as “chain wrestling”.

This is why dedicated Wrestling Classes will appear on your training schedule,

BJJ FOR FUN, HEALTH & FITNESS

You may want to learn BJJ simply for recreational purposes, for health, fitness, stress relief, fun and social interaction.  Take a look at our Recreational BJJ Schedule.  It offers the perfect mix of classes exactly for this goal.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu offers a full-body workout that improves your functional fitness and your endurance.  You will gain lean muscle mass, improve your strength, and flexibility, discover boosted energy levels and promote weight loss.  If you’ve had a bad day, BJJ offers a form of escapism. You’re only thinking about the present when you are training and because of this, BJJ is a very mindful activity.  Great for improving mood, managing your stress levels, fighting depression or anxiety and so much more..

BJJ is arguably the most fun martial art to learn. Unlike other martial arts that focus heavily on the physical aspects of training, BJJ is also considered a mental puzzle. Because of the problem-solving issues found in BJJ, it can be fun and addictive whilst training.  The mental side of BJJ never gets old.

On the social side, the comradery of BJJ is very strong and bonds can last for a lifetime.  You will make new friends and Storm Combat is a friendly, encouraging, fun-loving and close-knit combat tribe.

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING

Strength and conditioning is crucial for performance in every sport. In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, it is undeniable that for a given skill level, a stronger, faster player is harder to submit, harder to control, and poses a far greater threat than a slower, weaker opponent. At a competitive level strength, speed, and conditioning plays a very important role in determining which athlete will ultimately find themselves victorious.   This is especially true when the athletes are of similar technical skill in jiu-jitsu.
